Wolf Designs SMTP

Stop losing email to the spam folder

Your website sends account confirmations, password resets, order receipts, contact-form messages, invoices and notifications. When one fails, you may hear about it only after a customer says, “I never got the email.”

Wolf Designs SMTP routes WordPress messages through an authenticated SMTP server, records send activity, alerts you to failures and encrypts your SMTP password. Setup takes about two minutes.

$69 AUD per site — one-time payment, 12 months of free updates and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The problem with WordPress email

WordPress’s default mail route often depends on the hosting server’s local mail setup. If that setup is not authenticated or monitored for your domain, messages may be filtered, rejected or fail without a clear record.

The result can be frustrating:

  • Messages are flagged as spam or rejected by a recipient’s mail provider.
  • Failures happen quietly, so you may learn about them days later from a customer.
  • There is no built-in record showing what was sent, to whom or when.
  • Delivery depends on a hosting mail service that may not be suited to your site’s needs.
  • Some SMTP plugins store credentials as readable text; a database export or backup can expose them.

Give every message a clearer route

Wolf Designs SMTP connects WordPress to an SMTP server that authenticates your outgoing mail. It also gives you a log, failure notifications and tools to investigate a problem.

Important: SMTP can improve sending reliability and visibility, but it cannot guarantee inbox placement by itself. Your provider’s reputation and domain authentication settings also matter.

What Wolf Designs SMTP does

The practical tools for sending, tracking and troubleshooting your site’s email.

Send through authenticated SMTP

Enter your server, port, encryption and credentials, or start with a preset for Gmail, Outlook / Hotmail / Live. Supports TLS, SSL and Auto-TLS, with authentication enabled or disabled to match your provider.

Record each send

The built-in log records recipient, subject, status, timestamp and a reference number. Search by email address or subject, filter by date, open an entry for detail, delete selected records in bulk and export to CSV.

Control how long logs remain

Choose automatic log deletion after a set number of days, so you can keep useful records without letting the log grow unchecked.

Get alerts and delivery reports

Send failure alerts to up to three email addresses. Scheduled reports — daily, weekly or monthly — summarise sent and failed messages and show delivery trends.

Encrypt your SMTP password

The saved password is encrypted with AES-256 using keys derived from your site’s security salts. It is not shown again in the admin or included in settings exports as readable text.

Send in the background

Optional background sending queues mail so the page can respond first. Set per-minute, hourly, daily, weekly or monthly limits. Over-limit mail waits in the queue instead of being discarded.

Find out what went wrong

Two built-in tests help take the guesswork out of SMTP setup:

  • Test Connection checks whether the server, port and encryption settings can connect.
  • Test Email sends a real message and reports the recipient, server, port, encryption, authentication, elapsed time and whether the attempt was logged.

If a test fails, Wolf Designs SMTP points to likely causes such as connection, authentication, TLS or an invalid From address.

See the SMTP conversation

Open the collapsible diagnostic view to inspect the SMTP conversation line by line. It gives you useful detail to investigate a problem or share with support.

Stay in control of the queue

Check the queue counter and use Flush queue now when you want to process queued mail immediately.

Fits the way you work

  • Do Not Send mode: pause outgoing mail during staging, migrations or testing, without deactivating the plugin.
  • Export and import settings: move a working configuration to another site quickly. The SMTP password is excluded from exports.
  • Hide delivery errors: keep front-end messages quiet if you prefer to handle failures in the admin.
  • Multisite support: manage the plugin from a network-level menu.
  • Help where you need it: plain-English guidance beside each field.
  • Data that survives updates: replacing plugin files does not remove your settings, log or encrypted password.
  • Admin guide included: setup and everyday use explained inside the plugin.
  • No account or licence server: one plugin ZIP, with no separate account activation or routine licence-server check required.

Default WordPress mail vs Wolf Designs SMTP

Give your site a configured route, a record of its mail and tools to investigate failures.

  • Capability
  • Sending route
  • Email log
  • Failure visibility
  • Volume control
  • Credential protection
  • Diagnostics
  • Default WordPress mail
  • Depends on the host’s local mail setup
  • No built-in searchable log
  • Often no built-in alert or report
  • No plugin-level queue or rate controls
  • Depends on the mail setup
  • Limited built-in detail
  • Wolf Designs SMTP
  • Authenticated SMTP over TLS, SSL or Auto-TLS
  • Search, date filters, message detail and CSV export
  • Failure alerts and scheduled delivery reports
  • Background queue, manual flush and rate limits
  • SMTP password encrypted at rest
  • Connection and email tests with SMTP conversation

SMTP improves control and visibility, but inbox placement still depends on the sending provider and your domain’s authentication and reputation.

Why this one, and not another SMTP plugin?

A one-time licence, practical logging and alerts, and encrypted credential storage — included together.

You pay once

Wolf Designs SMTP is $69 AUD per site, one time. No renewal date, subscription or per-send fee. The supplied comparison cites competing annual plans at about US$99–$149 per site, with higher tiers costing more.

Useful tools aren’t paywalled

The email log, failure alerts, delivery report and CSV export are included in the licence — not held back as a paid-tier upgrade.

Your password is encrypted

The stored SMTP password is encrypted with AES-256 using keys derived from your site’s security salts. It is not displayed again after saving or included in settings exports.

Credential note: Keep your WordPress security salts and full-site backups protected. If salts are exposed along with the database, the encryption protection may be weakened.

Frequently asked questions

Will it work with my email provider?

It supports standard SMTP servers, including Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook, Office 365, Hotmail, Live, cPanel hosts, SendGrid, Mailgun and Amazon SES. Use a preset or enter the details manually.

Do I need an app password for Gmail?

If two-factor authentication is enabled, Google requires an app password. The preset points you to the relevant field, and the admin guide explains the steps.

Is my password safe?

It is encrypted at rest with AES-256 using keys derived from your site’s security salts, is not displayed again after saving and is excluded from settings exports. Protect your salts and full-site backups as well.

Will an update wipe my settings?

No. Settings, the email log and the encrypted password are stored independently of the plugin files.

Will it work with other plugins?

It hooks into WordPress’s mail system, so contact forms, WooCommerce and membership plugins can use the configured mail route without changes to their forms.

Do I need to know SMTP?

No. Choose a preset, enter your email address and password or app password, then send a test. Help icons explain the settings.

What happens when an email fails?

The attempt is logged with a status and failure details. If alerts are enabled, the selected recipients are notified; the diagnostic view can show the SMTP conversation.

Does the log prove it reached the inbox?

The log records the send attempt and SMTP status. It cannot guarantee inbox placement or prove that a recipient opened the message; filtering is controlled by the receiving provider.

Does it work on Multisite?

Yes. It includes a network-level admin menu for Multisite.

What are the requirements?

WordPress 6.0 or later and PHP 7.4 or later. No Composer, external service account or additional library is required.
